Dive Deep into the Roots of Faith: Why You Should Study the Early Church Fathers

Have you ever wondered what Christianity looked like in the centuries immediately following the Apostles? How did the Church survive persecution, define its core doctrines, and solidify the canon of Scripture? The answers lie in the writings of the Early Church Fathers, a group of influential theologians, bishops, and scholars from the first centuries of Christianity.

Studying the Fathers is not just an academic exercise; it’s an opportunity to uncover the foundational wisdom and spiritual depth of the faith. These are the men who battled heresies, clarified the nature of the Trinity and Christ, and poured out their hearts in sermons that still inspire today.

Pope Benedict XVI says this about the Fathers – “To me, the Church Fathers were not just teachers of the past, but traveling companions for the journey of my life.” — Reflections of Pope Benedict XVI (Audience February 2008)

This extract from the. book of Sirach (39: 1-11) encapsulates it all:

On the other hand he who devotes himself
    to the study of the law of the Most High
will seek out the wisdom of all the ancients,
    and will be concerned with prophecies;
he will preserve the discourse of notable men
    and penetrate the subtleties of parables;
he will seek out the hidden meanings of proverbs
    and be at home with the obscurities of parables.
He will serve among great men
    and appear before rulers;
he will travel through the lands of foreign nations,
    for he tests the good and the evil among men.
He will set his heart to rise early
    to seek the Lord who made him,
    and will make supplication before the Most High;
he will open his mouth in prayer
    and make supplication for his sins.

If the great Lord is willing,
    he will be filled with the spirit of understanding;
he will pour forth words of wisdom
    and give thanks to the Lord in prayer.
He will direct his counsel and knowledge aright,
    and meditate on his secrets.
He will reveal instruction in his teaching,
    and will glory in the law of the Lord’s covenant.
Many will praise his understanding,
    and it will never be blotted out;
his memory will not disappear,
    and his name will live through all generations.
10 Nations will declare his wisdom,
    and the congregation will proclaim his praise;
11 if he lives long, he will leave a name greater than a thousand,
    and if he goes to rest, it is enough for him.

Three Reasons to Embrace Their Wisdom

  1. Gain Clarity on Core Doctrines: The Fathers were present at the great councils (like Nicaea and Chalcedon) and wrote the definitive defenses of Christian truth. Reading them offers a direct line to the historical development and original meaning of beliefs like the Divinity of Christ and the reality of the Sacraments.
  2. Enrich Your Scriptural Understanding: They were often native speakers of the languages of the Bible (Greek and Latin) and possessed a deep, prayerful engagement with the text. Their commentaries, homilies, and letters illuminate the Scriptures in ways modern scholarship often misses, offering a rich, patristic lens for interpretation.
  3. Witness the Power of Christian Living: From St. Augustine’s profound Confessions detailing his journey to faith, to St. John Chrysostom’s powerful, practical sermons on justice and daily life, the Fathers offer timeless examples of holiness, repentance, and intellectual struggle. They were thinkers and spiritual guides who show us how to live a truly Christian life in a complex world.

To fully understand your faith is to understand its history. Don’t settle for secondary accounts; go to the source. Pick up the writings of Athanasius, Irenaeus, or Ambrose, and allow their ancient voices to guide you to a deeper, more robust faith. The journey into the wisdom of the Early Church is one of the most rewarding steps you can take in your spiritual life.

On Journey with the Fathers, we will be extracting some of the richness of these writings on a daily basis as they pertain to the daily Gospel Readings. We will be helped in our endeavour by St Thomas Aquinas who compiled some of these writings in his Catena Aurea (Golden Chain).

We will also tell you something about the Fathers themselves in our mini-biographies.
